There are many moving pieces when coordinating an in-school CPR-training for one of five classes you teach. You have to have available classrooms, class coverage, making sure your students not attending know where to go, and getting all this information out to everyone involved. These tasks take time and a lot of effort to complete. Then throw in a pep rally which changes the schedule and even though you check this new schedule multiple times a mistake was made. On the day of the training and pep rally, while waiting for the CPR-trainers to arrive at 7:15 am, 30 minutes until the start of classes, I discovered I did need a class covered because I misread the new pep rally schedule. I knew I had no coverage from my department because we all teach that period and my mind went from 0 to 60 in one second which put me into a nonfunctioning state. I managed to tell Helen our substitute coordinator who did not panic when I told her my predicament. I did not want to go to my department chair because he was already covering my class and seemed overwhelmed with staff constantly being out. Helen remained calm stating one of the subs was off that period and would check to see if they would cover my class- she could. All this happened within two minutes of me going to her. For me to try to solve this on my own would have required so much time and energy that I didn’t have and just made a crazy day less crazy. Thank you Helen.
