A Friend

Friends are a wonderful part of my life. As Aristotle, the philosopher, would put it, they are a constituent part to a good life for me. He said there were three kinds of friendship: friendships of pleasure, of utility, and of virtue. My friend Mary embodies all three for me. This past Wednesday, Mary, called me to go out to lunch, as we hadn’t seen each other for a while. I said I couldn’t as I had to weed my overgrown garden and then plant for an outdoor event on my patio the following night. Oh great she said. I’ll come for two hours and weed and catch up with you. She did. She pulled weeds, cut back plants, arranged tables and chairs, and helped me square away the menu and suggested a good nursery for my plant shopping. What a boost. I so enjoy her company and her generosity
